Pride Fest Milwaukee

6.25.14
- MILWAUKEE PRIDE FEST 2014.

On Friday afternoon, Milwaukee Pride got off to a rousing start, with the late afternoon ruling by Federal Judge BARBARA B. CRABB that struck down Wisconsin's amendment to it's constitution banning same-sex marriage.
"Quite simply, this case is about liberty and equality. I conclude that the Wisconsin laws banning marriage between same-sex couples are unconstitutional."

Several hours later, leaders opening the festival that is Milwaukee Pride heralded the news, and GLBT couples in Wisconsin lined up at registry offices across the state to be wed. The ruling was written in a way to prevent the state, and Governor SCOTT WALKER from immediately appealing or seeking a stay, and so weddings have proceeded in the state with a bit of controversy.

Meanwhile, the performers at pride whooped it up, with an energized audience on a remarkable festival grounds on the shores of Lake Michigan. Friday night BRUCE VILANCH introduced CHAD MICHAELS who channeled CHER, who was performing several miles away. CAZWELL performed at a dance pavilion that rocked all weekend like a pumping circuit party.

On Saturday MARY LAMBERT thrilled the crowd with her stories of coming out at the age of 17, and her moving performance of "She Keeps Me Warm". The event, which featured 6 stages and dozens of performers, concluded Sunday evening with a stunning performance by DEBBY HOLIDAY, who wowed the crowd with a cover of BETTE MIDLE5R covering JANIS JOPLIN with the song "Stay"; and a cranky SANDRA BERNHARD, who sang and whined in her usual manner; and LISA LAMPANELLI, sporting a new 85 pound weight loss and a lesbo haircut. She was literally unrecognizable, but for her biting routine on Jews, Asians, blacks, fags and corn-holers.

Put this one on your list.

1.17.14
- THREE YEARS THAT WILL LIVE ON FOREVER

Two actors left us yesterday, neither a household name, but each leaving indelible images of characters that lived on long past the 3 seasons their respective shows aired on television. And those characters, and the actors who played them will continue to live on now that they are gone.

RUSSELL JOHNSON was a World War II veteran, who went on to play tough guys, bit parts in TV and movie westerns, until he got his 3 hour tour on Gilligan's Island. The rest was history. Playing the straight-laced, somewhat hunky professor, the perfect compliment to the goofball Gilligan, RUSSELL became a famous, familiar face, and we didn't even know his character's name. He was THE PROFESSOR. I'm just now reading that his name on the show was Professor Roy Hinkley. Who knew? Who cared?

The show ran for just 3 seasons from 1964-1967, with a cast of characters that included the Skipper, Thirston Howell III and his wife, Gilligan, and two cuties, Ginger and Mary Ann. His sexual tension with Ginger, played by TINA LOUISE, and Mary Ann, played by DAWN WELLS, was classic. JOHNSON revealed years later that when he auditioned for the show, the producers wanted him to take his shirt off, but he refused. He got the job anyway.

It's always fascinating to examine one's life, and see the intersections throughout. He had an extensive military career, with many decorations, including the Purple Heart, for injuries sustained when he was shot down making a bombing run on Japanese targets in the Philippines. That was in 1945.

JOHNSON guest starred for 2 seasons on Dynasty in the late '80's.

He was married 3 times, with 2 children, and a stepson. His son David Johnson was the first AIDS Coordinator for the City of Los Angeles. He died of the disease in 1994. RUSSELL JOHNSON lived on Bainbridge Island, across the sound from Seattle. It was at that idyllic spot where he died in his sleep, yesterday.

Six years after Gilligan's Island, another saccharine sitcom crossed the airwaves, for just 3 seasons. And like RUSSELL JOHNSON, DAVE MADDEN played a familiar, friendly character that inhabited viewers lives for those short 3 years, but remained long after.

Reuben Kincaid played the manager for The Partridge Family, getting them into gigs, and various trouble along the way. He had a running feud with the boy bassist in the band, played by DANNY BONADUCE. The show featured DAVID CASSIDY, as the heart throb lead singer, and SHIRLEY JONES, as the singing matriarch of the musical family.

MADDEN got his start in showbiz as a magician and comedian, and one of his first professional gigs was on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. He also had a running spot as a customer at Mel's Diner on the show Alice. DAVE MADDEN also served in the Air Force, and was living in Florida at the time of his death yesterday.

Three cheers, for 3 great years, and two men whose work will live on forever.

Village People

- VILLAGE PEOPLE "POLICEMAN" WINS TERMINATION RIGHTS

In a little known section of the copyright laws that went into effect in 1978, an artist who signs away his copyright of works they created, reaquires "termination rights" in that same work 35 years later. As it is, the Village People's hits are now more than 35 years old, and so, VICTOR WILLIS, the former cop, and original "Macho Man" has elected to regain control of his work.

Victor Willis

WILLIS penned, or co-wrote some 33 songs back in the '70's for the popular disco group, including "YMCA", "In The Navy", "Go Wset", to name a few. (Ironically it turns out "Macho Man" was written prior to the 1978 law, and so it is not subject to reclamation.)

In an interview with the New York Times, WILLIS hinted that he might flex his newly gained power by limiting the performance of his hits. "I learned over the years that there are some awesome powers associated with copyright ownership. You can stop somebody from performing your music if you want to, and I might object to some usage."

Victor Willis

WILLIS and the newly comprise Village People obviously don't see eye to eye, having come out of nearly 6 years of litigation. Meanwhile, the Village People have been touring and preforming regularly, as the writer of the hits sat by and watched. We actually spoted WILLIS at the Walk of Fame ceremony for The Village People in Hollywood, hanging out, not at all part of the festivities.

Victor Willis

That could all change now. Says WILLIS, "I'm hoping that other artists will get a good lawyer and get back the works that a lot of us gave away when we were younger, before we knew what was going on."

In other words, "Young man, there's no need to feel down..."

Empress Jose

9.11.13
- THE EMPRESS IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE EMPRESS

San Francisco commemorated the passing of a pioneer over the weekend. JOSE JULIO SARRIA, better known as Empress Jose I was the subject of a funeral befitting royalty, or a high officer of the state, his life saluted in the princely Grace Cathedral in Nob Hill Friday afternoon.

SARRIA died at his home in Albuquerque at the age of 90 on August 19, 2013. He was born in San Fracisco in 1922. He is known to be the first ever openly gay individual in the United States to run for political office, having run for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1961.

He lost that race, but went on in 1964 to found the Imperial Court System, which annually crowned beauty queens, or empresses, but also went on to become an internationally acclaimed association of charitable organizations. He was the first Empress of the organization, and crowned himself in relation to a well known "celebrity" in San Francisco during the 19th century, JOSHUA NORTON, who declared himself the Empreor of Mexico and Protector of the United States. The bravado must have impressed SARRIA to no end, as he went on to purchase a burial plot next to NORTON'S, conduct pilgrimages to the plot annually to adorn it with flowers and such, and is now laid to rest in the adjacent plot.

His life prior to ascending to Empress was no less colorful.

SARRIA's mother, who was a maid for the maitre d' of The Palace Hotel, raised him during his early years, giving him up to be raised by a couple she knew, when things got rough. He served in the army during World War II, relocating back to the city by the bay after his discharge.

He landed a job as a waiter/bartender at the Black Cat, where his singing of arias landed him the title of "The Nightengale of Montgomery Street." He had a ritual at the end of each night to gather the remaining patrons and sing "God Save Us Nelly Queens" to the tune of "God Save The Queen," sometimes taking the revelry into the streets to profess the early activism to the tourists and other passersby.

He ran french food service at several World's Fairs, appeared in the movie "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar," but it was his activism, and his pioneering spirit, bringing to the forfront the inequalities of gays and lesbians for which he was honored Friday.

Civic leaders, women in black lace, and of course, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were all on hand to salute an empress, no, a man, larger than life.

The service concluded with a police cortege from Nob Hill to Colma, some 30 minutes or so south of the city, where JOSE SARRIA was buried, next to the Emperor JOSHUA NORTON. God bless the nelly empress.

Hot Guys with Guns

7.28.13 - Hot Guys With Guns after party at eleven night club, West Hollywood, CA. July 19, 2013

7.28.13
- CAPITAL CITIES BLOW OUT THE GROVE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES

It was a bit more crowded as I entered the parking lot for The Grove. A winding 6 story structurre, wedged densely into the middle of an already too crowded shopping mall squeezed about the original Farmer's Market in Los Angeles, the parking lot is an adventure on a good day. The lanes snake up each level in a less than rational way, spilling you into levels where open spaces exist.

On this night I had to ascend all the way to the top, and even then parking was sparse. Once out of my vehicle I made my way to the media check-in, which was overrun by so called VIP's anxious to access the precious, and roomy "pit area" directly in front of the stage. On this night, there were lots of "suits" milling around, no doubt execs from Columbia Records, with whom CAPITAL CITIES just released their first record album, "In A Tidal Wave Of Mystery."

I had heard the single, "Safe and Sound" nearly 2 years ago, from a service I get out of the Uk, and was impressed. But once I saw the video, a pice of art and homage to dance over the years, I was excited to see these two guys, who were said to have met on Craigslist. I wondered if it was all business.

After seeing them last night, it was evident these guys mean business, and are riding a rocket straight to the top of the music world. The sight of two mini keyboards with a computer screen was a bit deceptive, as the guys, RYAN MERCHANT & SEBU SIMONIAN are backed by a drummer, a bass player, an electric guitar, and fronted by an amazing trumpeteer, who blends that jazzy instrument into the most amazing dance sound. They were spectacular.

A little bit Pet Shop Boys, mixed with New Order, but altogether fresh, this quintet segued with ease between covers, Pink Floyd's "Breathe", The Bee Gees "Stayin' Alive", and Madonna's "Holiday", and their own material, "Chartreuse", "Kangaroo Court", "Love Away", "Center Stage", and a raucus "I Sold My Bed, But Not My Stereo."

All the while the deep house, pop dance, tribal rythym track underlined a melodic vocal team, punctuated with an urgent, whaling trumpet played by SPENCER LUDWIG. It was pure magic. CAPITAL CITIES is the ultimate party vibe, and, these guys can dance. It's more than just the amazing vide to "Safe and Sound." They are all about dance, and do so throughout their show, not wanting to quit at the end.

Of course they finished with their current radio hit, even doing a cutup remix of "Safe and Sound" after the "Holiday" encore number. But stay tuned, these guys have hit after hit to come, if last night was any measure of their talent. They could redo the National Anthem and it would be a #1 dance hit.

If you haven't seen the vidoe, see it now. Then check out their first release, it's full of happiness and emotion. It's one rolling good time, and that's without the ecstasy.

7.23.13 - Chase, The Personality -

...The morning sun peered it’s way into a completely unfamiliar office. I woke up wearing an In N’ Out hat, covered in Cocker Spaniels. I’m not being facetious. I was literally woken up by at least five cocker spaniels licking any part of my body with exposed skin. Where was I? How did I get here? And what the hell is with the hat?
This is West Hollywood, and this is my new life.
Reinvention. It’s my favorite word in the english language. In life, you have to surrender the person you are, for the person you are destined to become. This is the essence of change, and what inspires my very being. Of course it’s scary, but the future IS scary. Life is scary, but honey, it’s fabulous nonetheless.
I should probably introduce a little exposition into the story, so you as the reader, better have an idea of ME. Like most people, I came to Los Angeles with delusions of grandeur. I didn’t know what was to become of me, but I knew it was an adventure I wanted to experience. I had a dream job in my previous life. I was a Hairstylist and Teeth Whitener on board a luxury cruise liner... Not just that; out of all the ships, I was NUMBER ONE. Money was never a problem. Dropping 2,000 on a jacket because I saw it in GQ, it didn’t even make me blink. I traveled the world. I had experiences that were simply unreal. And all at 21. Life was good. Life was great. Life was easy! Then I took a vacation to LA in between ships. I was promised the best ship on my returning contract. My income was to double... But, no. No, I needed to have a new adventure. I’d fallen in love with a land called Hollywood. The town full of dreamers. It was intoxicating! Those four days were enough for me to leave everything I had, in pursuit of a dream.
I left home, and came to LA. I came, I waited. I waited... I waited some more. It was in this waiting that things changed. I was working in the salon one day when Sashaya came in. She goes to one of the other girls in the shop to get her hair done, but we always have a good chat. Sometimes about something, usually about nothing. We laugh, we rejoice. Normal salon behavior. But this day she had something to share with me. Her friend Bill Manuel, a man who was going to be my boss, needed someone to handle the social media for his company Manmade Multimedia. After meeting Bill, he decided that I needed to be more than the person who handled his social media, I was to become a Personality.
I tried to figure out what that meant, a Personality. I filmed a few videos where I got used to being myself in front of the camera. Worked a couple of fabulous events. Did my job. Then it hit me. My favorite thing to do... Reinvent myself. It was time to become CHASE.
I changed my clothes, gained ten pounds (I was REALLY skinny, as result of a high-drama relationship with a blue-blooded lad from a famous family (probably won’t date one of them again.)) and dyed my hair teal. Now, to most, a hairstylist dying their hair teal isn’t very dramatic, but where I come from it is. I come from a conservative, Irish, Catholic family. Electric colors were something I’d never had the balls to experiment with, until now. I was ready.
It was the after-party’s Red Carpet for the film “Hot Guys With Guns,” one of the most talked about films at OUTFEST LA 2013. I had a camera-lady, and was going to hit the carpet. Not just as myself, but the BEST version of myself. The old me was anxious, and shy. That was last years model, though. I HAVE TEAL HAIR, NOW!
After the Red carpet was set up the energy really started to explode. I tried to push down my anxiety, because ya know, the teal hair, and new clothes, but I was stressed. What was I going to talk about? I’ve never interviewed anyone before. What’s worse, I didn’t see the movie! A big ol’ whoopsie, I’d say. But no matter - I got this ‘ish, I’m Chase! I’m a boss, and why wouldn’t people want to talk to me? That thought went through my head for a grand total of 37 seconds, because then they brought out the GoGo dancers, and I was reminded how common I actually am.
Ah, yes. The elusive WeHo GoGo boys. Most of them models, most of them celebrities. They aren’t like most GoGo boys, with skinny little bodies and a complete inability to dance to the music. No, these men are Super heroes. If they banded together, I’m convinced they could save the world. Each with an impressive 10k IG fanbase, and a nightclub act that features ceiling acrobatics... These are NOT your typical GoGo boys. To me, they’re fascinating. I adore them, I really do.
Naturally, this group of sub-human super-gays, makes me nervous. Just. So. Good looking. That one second to the right, the most RIPPED one, was making eyes at me before the event, I swear. I couldn’t return the glances, though. It’s like looking into the sun, looking at them... Their beauty is just so intense.
I’m regressing, though. It wasn’t about them (for me it kinda was), it was about the event, and the celebrities were starting to arrive. The first was Hal Sparks. “Oh Shit. Oh Shit. Oh Shit!” I watched every episode of Who Loves the 80’s on VH1! Who doesn’t remember Queer as Folk? Oh Shit! He talked to the reporter next to me, first. I know that reporter... I’ve seen him on TV before, and what’s this? He was a little incompetant and Hal Sparks took his mic and said, “Should I do your part?” Um. This is my first interview, ever, and he seems to be a guy who doesn’t mess around. Oh Shit! He was lovely and funny about it, but Oh Shit!
Their interview ends and he comes to me. At this point I was so stressed, I blacked out. I have no idea what we talked about, but I remember it being engaging. I remember it being a fairly lengthy conversation about equality, or something? We talked about his bracelet, and I made him laugh.... That much I remember. Outside of that, no idea. Maybe I offered him my first born child? It’s possible. I don’t know. All I know is he liked me for some reason. And that was enough.
One after the other, the stars were arriving... And they all wanted to talk to ME! Some conversations were very profesh’. We talked about the movie, the script, the characters. Regular red carpet stuff. Some, however, were my kinda style. A lot of exclaimation points and ridiculous banter. The more time went on, the more it seemed I didn’t care, and the better the interviews were. We laughed, we joked. All around, we had a good time. Man, too. The compliments! Everyone was so nice, and seemed like they genuinely wanted to talk to me. Gah! It was such a BLAST! Alas, though, the last of the peeps were starting to make their way down.... The night was coming to a close, within the next hour. Major sadface. Just as I was getting comfortable!
Then, BOOM! My friend, and perhaps the biggest star there, Daryl Stephens spotted me. He came my way and complimented me on my new look (because he hadn’t seen me since I was orange and emaciated). We embraced, and he had to make his way.
Ha! None of the other reporters were as cool as me. I’ve got celebrity friends, what about it? Jealous, ‘Hello Hollywood’ people? What about you TMZ? It was in that moment I realized I was doing exactly what I was meant to be doing. Being myself, but doing so in front of a camera. It’s what I was designed for.
The red carpet was being rolled up, and the lights turned off. My fabulous evening was over, or so I thought. It was then that one of the people I talked to on the carpet, sought me out. It was the guy with the glasses, the one in the Gray. He wanted to know my story. What was I about? “I’m a personality,” I told him. “I’m still trying to figure out what that means, but I’d imagine stuff like this.” We had a lovely conversation about what that DOES mean... And then he left. Leaving me with great insight, and a WONDERFUL feeling of pride. Well, there’s the finale, a perfect cap, for a perfect night. Ope. Nope... then SHE walked up. The Poetic Impress.
This girl seems to be everywhere, and I adore her. She always dances into my life at the best time. “Hey Boo” She screams. She’s with actor Levi Otis, another good friend. “What are you doing with a microphone?” I proceed to tell her my story and make the decision to go with her. I kiss my camera-lady goodbye. We film a closing bit for the video, and I’m off to the VIP.
Now, surely this isn’t the way I thought this story would go. But it’s the way it went. I was in a glass room, separated from the rest of the club by a very large bouncer-man. I was VIP, with the very people the party was for. There were free drinks, named after the characters, and a lot of those handsome shirtless men that walk around the clubs in WeHo (Different than the GoGo boys. I think these men are the bartenders, just as beautiful, though).
I got the Pip, some sort of caramel infused vodka drink, and I proceeded to get my drank on. This, was perhaps what led to the Cocker Spaniel situation I explained earlier. Scratch that. 100% it was the caramel infused vodka drink. It doesn’t matter, though. They’re free, and that’s my favorite price. Down it goes, down a few went, actually. I had a great work night, and it was time to celebrate in style.
We danced into the morning. We laughed and carried on, sucking up each other’s awesomeness. Now, that sounds pretentious, but when you’re hanging out with people like that tall blonde glass of water, above; No, it’s a real thing. And it’s amazeballs.
After the AMF I had, things really get blurry. I remember ordering and seeing one of my favorite WeHo GoGo-Celebrities, and of course, adverting my eyes as he approached. I remember seeing some guy I’d made out with on my birthday, but forgot about (until he reminded me), and I remember one of the other Cameramen from the red carpet approaching me.
“You’re really good at that,” he said to me.
“Really, it was my first time.”
“Well, you’re good.”
I left. So delighted withy myself. So happy with how the evening progressed. I felt alive. Like this person that I reinvented myself into, was the person I was always supposed to be.
What was to happen between that moment, and the next morning, that’s very much the essence of West Hollywood, as well. From what I’m told, my car was quarantined in the lot, so logically we all went to In N’ Out, to fill our craving for junkfood. Apparently my car was of no concern, at the time. My bestie, Kelley Gates, lived around the corner, though. So I decided to invite myself over. Apparently the bitch had to carry me inside and made a nice bed for me in her office. Very nice, but quite the surprise the next day, I must say.
After waking, I picked myself up, still kinda drunk and very possibly pregnant. I walked down Santa Monica Blvd. - dressed in my best outfit, teal hair going insane - in search of my car.
Maybe the next morning wasn’t quite amazing. Actually it was borderline awful... But I didn’t care. The night prior was the kind of night people DREAM of having. The foggy memories fueled my quest, and I couldn’t help but look at how incredibly blessed my life is.
No longer am I just some rando. Now, I’m CHASE. Chase, the personality.

1.31.13 - CYNDI LAUPER'S VISIT TO CAPITOL HILL TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF GAY AND TRANSGENDER HOMELESS YOUTH FEATURED ON THIS SATURDAY'S EPISODE OF CYNDI LAUPER: STILL SO UNUSUAL ON WE TV AT 9 / 8c.

LAUPER AND HER TRUE COLORS FUND'S FORTY TO NONE PROJECT VISIT WITH CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS
LAUPER AND HER TRUE COLORS FUND'S FORTY TO NONE PROJECT VISIT WITH CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS

Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual\ follows the True Colors Fund co-founder through her “struggle of the juggle” of being a rock star, mother, wife, Broadway composer, New York Times bestselling author, and philanthropist. This season also features the launch of the True Colors Fund's Forty to None Project, the first national organization to solely address the issue of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness.

This week's episode offers a behind-the-scenes look at Cyndi's visit last May to Capitol Hill, along with her True Colors Fund and partner organizations the Human Rights Campaign, Center for American Progress and the National Alliance to End Homelessness, to advocate on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender homeless youth.

Meetings were held with various congressional leaders, including Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senator John Kerry and Representative Jared Polis, as well as a briefing for congressional staff, on a number of legislative matters that would have a positive impact for gay and transgender homeless youth:

- Increased funding for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.
- Added protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth in this year's reauthorization of the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.
- Passage of the Reconnecting Youth to Prevent Homelessness Act

Cyndi Lauper
LAUPER AND HER TRUE COLORS FUND'S FORTY TO NONE PROJECT VISIT WITH CONGRESSIONAL LEADERS

While also in Washington, DC, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius presented Cyndi with a SAMHSA Special Recognition Award for her work in helping gay and transgender homeless youth. "Homeless gay and transgender youth face unique challenges, like family rejection," said Cyndi. "They inspire me with their honesty and bravery to do all that I can to help them overcome their adversities and succeed in life."

It is estimated that up to 1.6 million youth are homeless each year. Up to 40% of these young people identify as gay or transgender, while only 3-5% of the general youth population does the same. The primary factor in these young people being homeless and for this large disparity is family rejection.

To learn more about how you can get involved and make a personal commitment to advocating on behalf of gay and transgender homeless youth, please visit the Forty to None Project at www.fortytonone.org.

Watch back-to-back episodes of Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual this Saturday night at 9pm EST | 8pm CST on WE tv.

ABOUT THE TRUE COLORS FUND
The True Colors Fund was co-founded by Cyndi Lauper to inspire and engage everyone, especially straight people, to become active participants in the advancement of equality for all and, through its Forty to None Project, to raise awareness about and bring an end to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth homelessness. Fire extinguisher scene from Universal Pictures 2009 release Brüno starring Sacha Baron Cohen.

“Should We Care?”

By Mike Skiff - Third Rail Media

Sometimes a fire extinguisher isn’t a device for saving lives....especially when an actor is using it on a movie set as a dangerous sex toy - by physically inserting the nozzle up another human being’s rectum and injecting the high pressure contents - for the purpose of satirizing the sex lives of gay men, as seen in the Universal Pictures 2009 comedy release ‘Brüno’ starring Sacha Baron Cohen.

Recently emerging details about this scene (warning - graphic content) have the LGBT community, including media watchdog group GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), expressing renewed concerns about Hollywood’s depictions of gay people - as well as what constitutes ethical filmmaking involving a major entertainment corporation.
! In the movie ‘Brüno’, Cohen - a married, heterosexual man in real life - plays a character he originated: the gay, Austrian fashionista named Brüno. In response to GLAAD’s concerns about the impact on the gay community from the negative stereotypes of gay men Cohen relied on to create Brüno, Universal Pictures pushed back, claiming the movie ‘Brüno’ used satire to “powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia.”

image_002

The fire extinguisher gag, as viewed in the ‘Brüno’ movie, lasts only split seconds. But on the DVD’s commentary track, Sacha Baron Cohen and director Larry Charles (actual name Lawrence Charles Wengrod) discuss in graphic detail the difficulties of pulling off the visual effect of white foam (“whipped cream”, Cohen claims) coming from the extinguisher as if bursting out of

actor Clifford Bañagale’s rectum. They talk about the painful mishap that occurred when Cohen inserted the nozzle inside of Bañagale, injecting the actor with its high pressure contents, causing Bañagale, as Cohen recounts, “to roll off the bed, start screaming, and then said ‘I have to go to the toilet’ and had an evacuation.”

image_003
(L-R) Sacha Baron Cohen, as Brüno, and actor, Clifford Bañagale (inset) director Larry Charles Wengrod and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Cohen says clinically the nozzle “had accidentally gone up...(Bañagale)” Wengrod adds, “Yes. Very high into his colon,” then snorts a laugh.
! While Cohen claims it was an accident on the DVD’s commentary track, Wengrod says, “We were encouraged to shove it in a little deeper.”

image_004
image_005

Using a frame grab of the extinguisher’s nozzle going to Bañagale’s anus - censored by a black dot - Third Rail Media was able to locate what looks to be a company logo on the fire extinguisher’s tank (see photo at top of story). The logo appears to be that of Amerex Corp, a major manufacturer of fire extinguishing safety devices.
Andy Halasz of Amerex acknowledged that the extinguisher being used by Cohen does appear to be one of the company’s products, and that Amerex never gave permission for their products to be
used in the ‘Brüno’ movie. He also released this statement:
Amerex has concerns regarding the use of this product other than for firefighting.
These would include the pressurization of the extinguisher, the contents used that replaced the agent in the extinguisher, and the potential for physical harm. Fire extinguishers are designed for one specific use: the suppression of fires. Amerex has never been involved in product placement, nor has the company asked for product placement. Amerex is willing to offer advice and consultation for proper use and placement of extinguishers in scenes involving extinguishers and has done so in the past without any compensation. Amerex was not aware of this movie or the sequence in which an extinguisher that appears to be an Amerex extinguisher was used.
The intentional misuse of a fire extinguisher as a sex toy inside an actor’s body in a major motion picture has also brought new attention to the subject of ethics in Hollywood filmmaking. In light of the new details surrounding the fire extinguisher gag
in ‘Brüno’, GLAAD”S vice president of communications, Rich Ferraro says, “With negative reactions from so many in the LGBT community, as well as many in the film industry, the film makes clear that more sensitive practices and content be priorities for the industry moving forward”.
! Gay director Quentin Lee (‘Ethan Mao’, ‘White Frog’), a fan of ‘Brüno’, felt the fire extinguisher gag was unethical when it was described to him by Third Rail Media reporters at a recent Bent-Con 2012 appearance, adding that he would have used CGI to get the effect instead.
! Another gay director who’s been outspoken about ‘Brüno’ ever since seeing a rough cut of the movie in which a gay-bashing was played for laughs is Richard Day (“Arrested Development”). Addressing a 2008 ‘Brüno’ filming incident at a downtown Prop 8 civil

demonstration, Day said in an email to Third Rail Media: “SBC using the Prop 8 rally as a backdrop for a comedy that sells out gays was absolutely a dick move. The whole movie was a dick move.”
! Day says he spoke out in 2009 at the time of the movie’s release because “SBC was carting out the same old tired stereotypes about gays at the worst possible time, and even worse his, comedy street cred might have actually convinced people that this retrograde caricature was somehow acceptable or even hip.”
! Much of the criticism at the time of the movie’s release dealt with Cohen’s minstrel- esque portrayal of a mincing, lecherous, self-absorbed, gay man; a role that harked back to blackface as performed by white entertainers in black make-up that perpetuated harsh stereotypes of African-Americans for over a century as lazy, dim-witted, and for black men - sexual predators white women needed to fear. Only in the ‘Brüno’ movie, it was the unwarranted sexual advances of Cohen’s naked character on a group of straight red-necks in their tents as they slept at night making for a discomforting scene with guns in the mix for fun.
! A principal ethos of the queer BDSM community is safe, sane and consensual sexual
play. Embraced by the gay men’s Leather culture at the height of the AIDS crisis in the late
1980s, ‘safe, sane and consensual’ came from a place of responsibility and compassion. How Cohen and Wengrod felt using a fire extinguisher as a sex toy on another human being was a legitimate form of satirical commentary on the lives of kinky gay men is anyone’s guess.
! “He lost his anal virginity to an inanimate object,” Cohen glibly says of his co-actor
Bañagale at the end of the DVD commentary on the fire extinguisher gag.

image_006
Kristofor Graham, suffered horrific injuries after a drunken prank with a fire extinguisher in 2004.

! The physical harm that can be caused by as a result of ejecting the high pressure contents of an extinguisher inside a human colon is tragically made clear in 2004 by a drunken prank gone horribly wrong for Scottish DJ Kris G.
! Kristofor Graham, who DJ’d in Scotland’s clubs, was attacked by workmate Brian Kennedy as he lay passed out after both had been drinking. Kennedy shoved the nozzle of a fire extinguisher inside Kris’s rectum and released its contents inside him. Kris spent two weeks in the hospital but was re- admitted with abscesses, leading to a colostomy.
! Kris said, “I have suffered a great deal of torment. This hadcaused me tremendous pain.”

! Five years after the attack, unable to cope with the physical and emotional trauma resulting from the fire extinguisher prank, Kristofor Graham ended his own life at the age of 27.
! Kennedy, his attacker, was fined 4,500 GBP and sentenced to 300 hours of community
service.
! Bañagale told Third Rail Media he wished he could talk about events surrounding the filming of ‘Brüno’, but that he’s under a non-disclosure agreement that Cohen would first have to release him from - which according to Bañagale, Cohen hasn’t. It is possible that GLAAD could advocate on Bañagale’s behalf, putting pressure on Cohen to free Bañagale from the
agreement that keeps him silent for nearly four years.
! If Amerex could prove that the logo on the fire extinguisher was in fact theirs, the issue of
trademark dilution’ by Universal Pictures may arise because the brand is tarnished by an unsavory or unflattering association. The Federal Trademark Dilution Revision Act of 2006 gives corporations this legal protection. Asked if Amerex was concerned that its brand could be tarnished by the possible usage of their safety device, Halasz said: “It would be difficult to say whether the company’s image has been tarnished as we have been unaware of this scene until now, and we have not had any concerns raised by any of our customers.”
! Whether the fire extinguisher gag will remain part of the footage, as currently seen in the
‘Brüno’ movie and on the DVD commentary track, will be a decision for NBCUniversal (the parent company of Universal Pictures).
! NBCUniversal was asked for this article if their legal department had vetted the ‘Brüno’ movie and DVD before their public distribution - as well as if they considered inserting the nozzle of a fire extinguisher inside another human being and injecting the high pressure contents for commercial entertainment to be ethical filmmaking. NBCUniversal spokesperson Kori Bernards declined to comment and referred all questions to Media Rights Capital, a production company of the film.
! MRC spokesperson Susie Arons also declined to answer the same inquiry about the ethics of the fire extinguisher’s usage on a human being in their film.

Sacha Baron Cohen is set to star as iconic gay rocker Freddie Mercury in an untitled biopic scheduled for release in 2014.

9.26.12 - Nominees For The First Annual 2012 Fright Night Awards Presented By Cancer Bites Announced
NOMINEES INCLUDE: HALLE BERRY, JOHNNY DEPP, HONEY BOO BOO, KATE MIDDLETON, JACK NICHOLSON, PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, KATY PERRY, BRAD PITT, ROBIN ROBERTS AND KRISTEN STEWART, AMONG OTHERS

THE FIRST-EVER FRIGHT NIGHT AWARDS ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO VOTE ONLINE FOR THEIR FAVORITE SCARY MOVIES, TV SHOWS, SUPERNATURAL CELEBRITIES AND MORE GOING INTO HALLOWEEN TO RAISE BLOOD CANCER AWARENESS

LOS ANGELES (October 22, 2012) – Cancer Bites, a national blood cancer awareness and education campaign launching on Halloween, announced the nominations for the first annual 2012 Fright Night Awards today – from Robert Pattinson to Lady Gaga – in which fans all around the world can vote for their favorite frights in 21 categories that encompass film, television, celebrity costumes and more. The Fright Night Awards is a virtual awards show held exclusively online. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, October 30. Fans can vote for their favorites at www.frightnightawards.com.

CANCER BITES has enlisted the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) to help fuel its mission. As the nation's leading blood cancer patient advocacy organizations, LLS, LRF and MMRF will play an integral role in the campaign at every level: funding research to find effective new treatments and cures; connecting patients and their families to free educational information; and providing support services for patients at every stage of their cancer journey. The awareness campaign will encourage the public to support their efforts to beat cancer.

Despite the fact that every four minutes someone will be diagnosed with a blood cancer and that collectively blood cancers make up the fourth most common cancer type overall, blood cancer lags far behind other cancer education initiatives on the public awareness scale. Cancer Bites is aiming to change that.

Harnessing the Halloween season and the public's obsession around the mystique of vampires and the supernatural, Cancer Bites has assembled a powerful team of partners, experts and spokespeople to educate the public about the prevalence of blood cancers. Cancer Bites will focus on raising awareness around those most impacted by the disease and creating a broad national dialogue on the importance of funding life-saving research. Robert Pattinson introduced the concept at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards in his acceptance speech for his "Choice Celebrity Vampire" win by saying "Cancer Bites!"

For Cancer Bites and the Fright Night Awards, blood cancer survivor and creator/co-executive producer of the FOX Teen Choice Awards, Michael Burg saw a unique opportunity to raise awareness for blood cancer programs and generate broad national dialogue. "Bringing a touch of entertainment and fun together during a time that celebrates Halloween is really rewarding," said Burg. "Our ultimate goal is to rally the public to increase overall awareness of blood cancers."

"The New Normal"

These days, families come in all forms – single dads, double moms, sperm donors, egg donors, one-night-stand donors… It's 2012 and anything goes. Bryan (Andrew Rannells, "Girls," "The Book of Mormon") and David (Justin Bartha, "The Hangover") are a Los Angeles couple and they have it all. Well, almost. With successful careers and a committed, loving partnership, there is one thing that this couple is missing: a baby. And just when they think the stars will never align, enter Goldie (Georgia King, "One Day"), an extraordinary young woman with a checkered past. A midwestern waitress and single mother looking to escape her dead-end life and small-minded grandmother (Emmy and Tony Award-winner Ellen Barkin), Goldie decides to change everything and move to L.A. with her precocious eight year-old daughter. Desperate and broke – but also fertile – Goldie quickly becomes the guys' surrogate and quite possibly the girl of their dreams. Surrogate mother, surrogate family.

Ryan Murphy serves as creator/executive producer and director along with creator/executive producer Ali Adler ("Glee," "Chuck") and executive producer Dante Di Loreto ("Glee," "American Horror Story").

"The New Normal" is produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ryan Murphy Productions.

Pointer Sisters
8.15.12 - Pointer Sisters at Market Days Chicago.

On a weekend in Chicago when the weather was unusually cooperative, REEL GAY TV attended their first Market Days, and the verdict is a definite thumbs up. Most of the locals say this festival, which inhabits "boystown" along Halstead between Belmont and Addison, is their favorite local event, even better than pride. Parades are a little overrated.

Anyway, no one missed the marching bands, what with MIA MARTINA, WYNTER GORDON, KARMIN, SHEENA EASTON, THE POINTER SISTERS and olivia newton john taking to the 4 stages.

Martina
Martina
Martina
Wynter Gordon
Wynter Gordon
Wynter Gordon

WYNTER GORDON was her sweet self, but hung around after her 5-song set to take pictures with nearly everyone of her fans. She was still hanging around an hour after the show, posing, hugging and generally eating up the love that the crowd had for her.

MIA MARTINA was sexy and stylish, backed by a live band that included the famous accordion from the hit "Stereo Love" and a sax player that was as good as she. It's not often you catch a dance diva backed by a tight, powerful live band, including DJ, and it was a real treat.

We were introduced to a new act that we totally fell for-ERIC HIMAN, who looks a bit like ADAM LEVINE, and rocks like the real deal. This guy has got it-tatoos, a manly presence on stage, a comfort level with the genre of music that is lacking in most wannabe rock and rollers-he did a cover of "Valerie" that was phenonmenal, and his original material is fantastic too. Plus, he is openly gay, and sings of topics that fit more squarely into GLBT lives, while still being authentic rock. Check out "Little Boy Blue." Amazing!

The really shocking event of the weekend was the polished and energetic performance by THE POINTER SISTERS. I know they are mutliple Grammy winners, and I know that have a string of hits that could stretch to the moon and back. But didn't they start back in the day we first landed on the moon. (Actually, their first album was released in 1973.). I was not excited to see them.

But the crowd sure was, packing in the stage area and the street leading into the stage, gridlocking the entire festival. The "girls" came out in bright colored flapper dresses, RUTH in blue, ANITA in red, and some new girl in stunning yellow. At first galnce they seemed about the same age-ageless-but after further review it was clearf the new girl was younger, and not liked very much. She was left in the back as RUTH and ANITA traded lead vocals on "Happiness", "Slow Hand", "Automatic", "Fire", "I'm So Excited" etc., etc. These ladies can still sing!

Near the middle of the show we learn that the new girl is actually RUTH'S granddaughter, SADAKO. Not her daughter, her granddaughter! No wonder the old pros don't give her much shine, until the end of the show, when grandma turned it up a notch on "Neutron Dance" riffing and dancing with the youngster, before giving her a lead role on the show's finish, "Jump For My Love." It was electrifying, and that from a couple of near 70-year olds. Unbelievable.

SHEENA EASTON, KARMIN, OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN and a host of others completed a crazy crowded, booze filled weekend at Market Days Chicago. Each of the bars has a liquor booth on the street, and most of the city's best clubs are located along and within the festival so in addition to wlaking the streets, you can pop in and out of your favorite "boystown" destinations. A great, great time!
